Alberta SCN-MEDEC Initiative White Paper Part One Released

At the 2017 MEDEC MedTech Conference, we were pleased to release part one of a white paper outlining an initiative MEDEC is collaborating on with health system partners in Alberta (Alberta Health Services’ Strategic Clinical Networks and Alberta Innovates) focusing on the adoption of innovation. The white paper, The SCN-MEDEC Initiative: A Systems Approach in the Management of Health Technology – Part 1: Necessity, Design and Approach, explores some of the challenges with the current approach to the adoption of innovative medical technologies in Canada and presents an alternate approach that the partners have taken that seeks to overcome these challenges.

Included in the document are a set of “Value for Money Principles” that promote a value-based approach to the adoption of innovative medical technologies and address the need to implement a collaborative “systems” approach to achieve adoption – benefiting the health care system and medical technology innovators.

The first demonstration project as a part of the SCN-MEDEC collaboration involves the Critical Care SCN, MEDEC member bioMérieux and Alberta Innovates. The initiative will utilize bioMérieux’s advanced diagnostic testing to identify sepsis (serious infection) earlier in order to optimise antibiotic treatment so that patients receive the timeliest and most appropriate therapy.

Part two of the white paper will focus on implementation, outcomes and lessons learned.

The white paper can be found here.
